questions other parents may have.
Anna received her first band at 5 months for brachy/plagio. It was a
Danmar band from MI. Her brother, Max, received the same band and he
had correction for the plagio in just 3 weeks. His head isn't
perfect, but after have the evaluation at Docband, we decided he
really didn't need another band. His head looks good.
Anna on the other hand, wore her Danmar helmet until she was 12
months old. It actually made her head shape worse and I am certain
she should not have worn it that long. The cranial facial surgeon
said it still fit and that she should continue to wear it. Our Ortho
kept telling us her head looked good but it just never looked right
to us. Anyway, I took both kids to CT and I was told that Anna's
brachy was 101% and that her asymmetry was 10mm! I knew something
was off and I am so glad that I took her to CT.
She received her second band (first one from CT) at 12 months and
wore it until 15 months. We made the three hour drive every other
week and her results are amazing. I noticed it right away and within
two weeks friends told me they could tell that something looked
different. For her, the amazing thing was that her head
circumference didn't change at all. Her head actually grew to fill
in the gaps and make her head more round. The strange thing that the
Danmar helmet did for her, was that it pushed her forehead flat back
and gave her extra height on the top of her head. She also had volume
loss on the side of her face, making her facial asymmetry off. It was
just how it was letting her head grow. Her profile was off and
looked like a slope up to the back. The Docband, gave her the
correct slop of her head, gave her a normal looking forehead and her
head grew in the length going from 101% CI to 88% CI. Her asymmetry
in each category is 0mm!!
I just wanted to write and let everyone out there know that you
should go with your gut. As parents, we know what is best for our
children. Heads can round out on their own but that was a chance I
was not willing to take. We went through a lot to get where we are.
We have spent a lot of money and time correcting our kids head shapes
and I promise that it is worth it. I will post her before and after
pictures once I get them from CT.
Good luck to everyone dealing with brachy / plagio. It is a very
scary road to start down and it is hard because so many people know
nothing about it.
